We at Healthline Nutrition want you to eat foods that make you feel good. We always start by looking at the science, but we also understand that real life eating does not fit into a perfect nutritional pattern. You can still enjoy your meals while refreshing your eating habits.

Every January, almost everyone becomes interested in nutrition, wellness, and health. Many people make resolutions to lose weight, change their eating habits, achieve fitness goals and more. Although I appreciate the passion for taking care of oneself, too many people start by eliminating foods and going to the gym seven days a week. It may seem like a great idea at first, but it tends to fade after a few weeks.

What if, instead of banning sugar, carbohydrates, or bread, you concentrated on making small positive changes? Changes that are not as dramatic but more likely to last.

Only 9% of people keep their New Year's resolutions. Why not opt for a healthy refresh? Although it's not exciting, getting back to the basics is essential.

You're not the only one who feels confused about where to begin. Most people have an opinion on nutrition that is not always -- or rather, rarely -- supported by evidence.

It can be difficult to sort through the nutrition information on social media and determine what is true and what you should do. Start with what science has to say and start small.

Drink more water. A recent study showed that hydration was essential for healthy aging.

Sleep is essential for your overall health, and it can also affect your appetite and food desires. Try these scientifically-based tips to improve sleep. We know that many people don't eat the recommended amount fruits and vegetables. Here are some simple and creative ways to get more.

You're doing well if you already check these boxes and get some exercise. Consider other ways to change your eating habits. You could set a goal of trying a new food every week, eating more protein-rich snacks and meals, cooking at home or doing meal preparation on Sundays.

Observe how many of the changes I suggest are positive. You can easily add these foods and habits to your daily routine. I'm not a fan of restriction or deprivation but I think adding good things can help naturally crowd out bad behaviors.

Healthline wants nutrition to be accessible for everyone.

Nutrition and healthy eating are often presented as an $80 smoothie with potions, powders and tinctures. You can make a healthy smoothie using frozen fruits and vegetables for a fraction the cost.

Healthy food should also taste good. Healthline readers only rated healthy food as good by 29%. This means that the majority of people associate healthy food with bad taste. This is a myth that I hope we can all banish.

Have you ever had a roasted Brussels sprout? The flavor is a world away from the boiled or steamed sprouts that you might remember as a child.

Healthy eating should include foods you enjoy, that you have grown up with and that are a part of your culture.

More than just a plate

When it comes to health, nutrition is just one part of the puzzle. Although good nutrition is important, it is not the only factor that matters.

Some of the changes you make to your diet will be on your plate. Others will occur outside of nutrition. Get more sleep, move your body and take care of your mental health.

This year, let yourself be kind to yourself and stop feeling guilty about eating food.

If I reach for more processed foods than usual on a given day, I probably spent the time making great memories. I don't beat myself up and instead let go, trusting that my next few meal will be more nutrient dense.

We'll help you learn about the best nutrition for your body and then empower you to apply that knowledge to find out what works. It could be a high-protein meal or a cookie.

I want you to abandon the idea of perfect eating and embrace foods that make you happy.

When you visit Healthline nutrition I hope you feel like you are sitting down to a balanced, comfortable meal with a good friend who knows a lot about nutrition.
