The Champaran Satyagraha of 1917 was the first major civil disobedience movement led by Mahatma Gandhi on Indian soil. It marked Gandhi’s active entry into the Indian freedom movement after his experience in South Africa. The movement addressed the exploitative indigo plantation system imposed by British planters in the Champaran district, Bihar.
