India’s Preparation Against GLOF Events UPSC
Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) are sudden floods triggered when the boundaries of glacial lakes–created due to glacier melt–give way, releasing large amounts of water downstream. These floods pose severe threats to the Himalayan region, endangering lives, critical infrastructure, and ecosystems. The recent Sikkim GLOF in 2023, which resulted in significant loss of life and damage, reinforced the urgency for a structured and science-based approach to risk mitigation in India.
