Ethernet Switches And Routers: The Heart Of Modern Network Infrastructure
An Ethernet switch is a network switch that connects devices together on a local area network (LAN) using Ethernet. Ethernet switches work at the data link layer (layer 2) of the OSI model to filter and forward packets based on Media Access Control (MAC) addresses. While similar to routers which connect multiple networks together, switches only operate within a single broadcast domain and do not perform network layer routing between IP subnets like routers do.
Ethernet switches learn the MAC addresses of connected devices by examining the source MAC addresses in Ethernet frames passing through the switch. It builds a MAC address table mapping ports to MAC addresses within its network segment. Switches then filter incoming frames using this MAC address table so it only forwards them to the appropriate port instead of broadcasting to every port like a hub would.
