Ammonia: Vital Compound for Agricultural and Industrial Applications

Production and Uses of Ammonia

Ammonia is one of the most abundantly produced chemicals worldwide with massive annual global production of over 180 million tonnes. It is primarily used to produce nitrogen fertilizers that are essential for improving agricultural yields to feed the ever-growing global population. Around 80-90% of ammonia production is consumed by the fertilizer industry for manufacturing ammonium nitrate, urea and other nitrogen-based fertilizers. Apart from agriculture, ammonia also finds applications in many other industries such as textiles, plastics, paper, refrigeration and cleaning products.

Ammonia is produced on an industrial scale via the Haber-Bosch process which involves reacting nitrogen from air with hydrogen derived from natural gas or coal. This energy intensive production process requires high pressure and temperature for the reaction to occur efficiently. Most Ammonia plants are located close to natural gas sources or have import and storage facilities for hydrocarbon feedstock. Electricity generation also plays a major role in ammonia production to meet the power requirements of the Haber-Bosch process.
