The history of Damascus steel dates back to at least the 3rd century AD and is often associated with the ancient Near East, particularly Syria and India. The term “Damascus steel” may have originated from the capital city of Damascus, a hub of commerce where these exceptional blades were traded and possibly forged. However, the steel itself was not produced exclusively in Damascus. Rather, the raw material—known as “wootz steel”—was originally made in India and Sri Lanka, then transported and crafted into blades across the Middle East.
