Dog Travel Essentials: What To Pack Before Taking Your Pet On A Trip

Taking your dog on a trip can be a lot of fun, but getting ready for it takes a little planning.

You have your own bags to pack, and then there are all the things your dog needs for the journey; food, water, a leash, familiar items and a few extras for unexpected messes.

It is easy to forget one or two things when you're trying to get everything ready at once. A simple dog packing list can help you stay organized without overpacking.

Whether you're heading out for a weekend or taking a longer road trip, knowing what your dog actually needs will make the journey easier for both of you.

Start With Your Dog, Not the Suitcase

Before you start throwing things into bags, get your dog ready.

Take them for a walk, let them use the bathroom and give them a chance to burn off some energy. If your dog is usually restless in the car, a little exercise beforehand may help them settle down.

It's also worth checking their collar and ID tag before you leave.

A personalized dog collar can be useful when you're traveling somewhere unfamiliar. Having your dog's name or your contact information on the collar gives you an extra layer of reassurance if they happen to wander away.

If your dog takes medication, keep it somewhere easy to reach. Don't bury it underneath your luggage.

Make a Small Bag for the Journey

Your dog's main bag can stay in the trunk. But some things should be within arm's reach.

Put together a small bag with the things you may need during the drive:

• Water

• Anti-spill bowl

• Leash

• Treats

• Waste bags

• Pet wipes

• Small towel

• One toy

This sounds simple, but it makes a difference.

Imagine stopping at a rest area and realizing the leash is underneath two suitcases. Nobody wants to unpack the car just to take their dog for a five-minute walk.

Keeping these dog travel necessities close makes those little stops much easier.

Stick With Their Normal Food

A road trip probably isn't the best time to introduce a new food.

Bring the food your dog normally eats and take enough for the whole trip and also pack a little extra. Delayed journeys happen, and finding the exact food your dog eats in an unfamiliar town isn't always easy.

Take their usual bowls, treats and a container or bag that keeps the food secure.

If you can, keep their feeding routine fairly normal too. Dogs are creatures of habit, and having something familiar during a trip can help them settle.

Bring a Little Piece of Home

Your dog may not understand why they're suddenly sleeping in a hotel room or staying somewhere they've never seen before.

A familiar blanket or favorite toy can help.

It doesn't have to be their entire bed. Even a small blanket that smells like home can be comforting when everything around them is unfamiliar.

And don't go overboard with toys. One or two favorites are enough. If your dog enjoys something that keeps them busy, interactive dog toys are worth considering for quiet time at your destination.

Be Ready for Mud, Water and Other Surprises

There's a good chance your dog will get dirty during the trip.

Maybe they'll find a muddy patch during a walk. Maybe they'll get wet. Maybe they'll simply decide that rolling around in the grass is more important than staying clean.

That's why a few pet grooming supplies deserve a place in the bag.

You don't need a complete grooming kit. A brush, pet-safe wipes and a towel will cover most of the little messes you'll encounter.

And take an old towel if you have one. It's one of those things you may not think you'll need until your wet dog jumps straight into the car.

Check the Weather Before You Pack

The weather at home isn't necessarily the weather you'll be dealing with at your destination.

If you're heading somewhere cold, your dog may need a coat or sweater. If you're traveling somewhere warm, you'll want to pay more attention to water, shade and breaks.

If you're looking at dog clothes online, make sure the clothes fit properly. Your dog should be able to walk, sit, lie down and move around without struggling.

There's also no reason to dress your dog just because a particular outfit looks cute. If they don't need it, leave it at home.

Pack for What You're Actually Going to Do

This is probably the easiest way to avoid overpacking.

Think about the trip itself.

Staying at a hotel for two nights? Your dog probably won't need much more than the basics.

Going camping? Hiking? Spending the day at the beach? You'll need to think a little differently.

Consider where you'll be staying, how much time your dog will spend outside and what activities you have planned. Your answers will tell you which items are genuinely useful.

That's much better than stuffing the car with things you might use “just in case.”

Keep Their Important Information Handy

Not everything on your travel list is something your dog will wear, eat or play with.

Keep their important information with you too.

Depending on your trip, this could include vaccination records, medication, identification details, microchip information and your veterinarian's contact information.

You may never need any of it. Hopefully, you won't. But having it ready is far better than trying to find it when you're already dealing with a problem.

Take One Last Look Before You Leave

Once the bags are packed, take a minute.

Check the food. Check the water. Check the leash and collar. Make sure you have the ID, medication and anything your dog uses every day.

Look at the weather one more time.

You can also bring a few personalized pet accessories if you want your dog's belongings to be easier to identify while you're away.

Then stop packing.

Seriously.

It's easy to keep adding things because you think you might need them. But your dog doesn't need an entire suitcase of stuff.

Pack those first. Add anything specific to your destination, and leave the rest behind.

Once you're on the road, you'll probably find that the trip is much easier than you imagined. And instead of worrying about the bag in the trunk, you can enjoy watching your dog discover a new place right alongside you.
