Often, I hear statements like, I dont understand why one should go to a counselor; generally, everything is fine with me, except What typically follows is a story that has been dragging on and weighing down a person for years, as if theyve become attached to it. Its akin to a suitcase without a handledifficult to carry, yet a shame to discard. The norm is what were accustomed to, what we encounter daily. And if we feel bad every day, then this discomfort also becomes our norm and feels normal to us.

Alternatively, some might say, I have this particular problemcan you solve it? or How many sessions will it take for you to help me?

Whats problematic about these phrases?

Can a counselorsolve your problems?

Working with a counselor is always a collaborative effort; its a tandem. I once engaged in diving, where the term buddy refers to your diving partner. You dive together, stay close to each other, ensure that the tanks dont leak, assist each other through perilous areas, and monitor your partners condition.

In therapy, the counselor is the clients buddy in their journey to delve deeper. A counselor is someone you trust, someone who is there for you, ready to share air if you run out, and help you if you get stuck. They see your blind spots and are prepared to illuminate them, so you can view your world more fully. They are a companion with whom you can navigate lifes challenging moments and emerge from a deficit into a surplus.

But first, one must confront their true self, their reality, their beliefs, and attitudes, which are often unrecognized or perceived as normal.

Sometimes, this process is painful. Yet, it leads to a beautiful clarity, which is why I am so passionate about therapy. How do I become so invested in a situation that I end up with such results? How do I create difficult relationships for myself? Why are my boundaries constantly violated, yet I do nothing about it?

How do I find myself entangled in feelings of guilt, and how can I swiftly extricate myself from them? How do I typically interpret my reality, others actions, and how do I anticipate events?

The counselor assists the client in noticing all this within themselves and, as a result, acting and living differently.

If you find yourself grappling with persistent challenges or emotions that seem overwhelming, it may be beneficial to consult with a psychologist, therapist, or counselor. These professionals provide a supportive environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings, gain deeper insights, and develop strategies to enhance your well-being.
