Maurice Lacroix Pontos Automatic Chronograph Review

Jewels created by certain watchmakers sometimes fly under the radar. Let's explore a special timepiece in our review of the Maurice Lacroix Pontos Automatic Chronograph.

Somehow, over the years, I never seem to read or write reviews of Maurice Lacroix watches very often. With so many quality watches on the market, it’s getting more and more challenging to get each watch the attention it deserves, but today, that’s about to change! We're going to talk about a watch that not only looks good, but also has a case that deserves a detailed discussion.

Maurice Lacroix Pontos Automatic Chronograph Review
This watch has some aesthetic appeal that's hard to pin down. From the monochromatic design to the tasteful use of textures and concentric rays on the sub-dials, the look of this watch is modern and edgy. It doesn't look futuristic like any watch, but has many traditional design elements that incorporate more modern elements like a rubber strap and very nice typography.

Some good examples are the matte black PVD case and lugs, the wavy turbo textured crown grip and smooth lines, as well as the font used for typography and the Roman numerals around the tachymeter.

The dial features black central minute and hour hands with white tips. The small running seconds can be seen on its own sub-register at the 9 o'clock position. The chronograph features a slender central seconds hand that also has a white tip. There is a subdial at 12 o'clock, a 30-minute counter and a 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock. There is also a date window at 6 o'clock, within the 12-hour subdial - register.

The case back is a transparent sapphire caseback with several white markings in the upper left corner of the caseback, including the series name PONTOS, printed in white using a thin sans-serif font.

On the upper right of the case back, the words Swiss Made are printed in white and the reference PT6188 is located on the lower right of the case. Juxtaposed with the crown on the case back is the 5ATM water resistance logo. The case is secured with five steel screws, which can be seen on the back of the case.

The Maurice Lacroix Pontos Automatic Chronograph is powered by the Maurice Lacroix ML112 movement using the ébauche, ETA/Valjoux 7750 automatic movement as the base. The ETA/Valjoux 7750 deserves its own article on its own. Some interesting facts about the movement and its history:

The Valjoux 7750 was one of the first watch movements to be designed using computer-aided design (CAD).

It was developed by Edmond Capt, known for his collaborations with Blancpain and Lemania.
In the early 1970s, Edmond Capt used Neuchâtel's computer to perform mathematical calculations and simulations of its various components.

The ETA Valjoux 7750 is the most popular Swiss-made automatic chronograph movement in history.

It was so popular that Sellita was subcontracted to manufacture them to meet demand, and at one point, Sellita created a movement they called the SW500, which was essentially a clone of the Valjoux 7750.

The Valjoux 7750 is used by many manufacturers as the base for many watches.

The watch described in this post has model number #pt6188-ss001-331 and it is secured to the wrist by a soft and comfortable rubber strap with a black PVD pin buckle emblazoned with the Maurice Lacroix logo.
